Thoughts on Black Lightning – S2 E5

seriouslycromulent:

It’s only been a week, but man, have I missed this show. I needed this joy right about now.

Here we go …

  • Kudos to the writers of the show for giving James Remar an opportunity to speak Japanese on screen. I know his ex-wife is Japanese and his kids are half-Japanese, so hearing him get a chance to show of his linguistic skills was a nice choice. Plus it fits the character as someone in special forces will likely know how to speak multiple languages.
  • Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head” is a nice touch as a music choice for a scene where someone is trying kill Gambi. 1) because I love that song, and 2) isn’t Gambi supposed to be Italian? Although, he said his real name was Esposito, which sounds Spanish, not Italian. But Gambi still has a ton of secrets, so he could have been lying about that too. Anyway, I still love this song.
  • Whoa! Real calculus homework on TV? Black Lightning definitely likes to keep it real. Respect.
  • Gambi ain’t gone. Forget that. I’m like Jefferson. Show me a body or it didn’t happen. You may have killed Syonide, but not Gambi. Nope. Not going to believe it.
  • Uh oh! Grace’s emotions triggered her meta abilities. It’s interesting how much everyone’s emotional responses are linked to their superpowers.
  • What the hell happened to Deacon? What does Amaya know? That came out of nowhere.
  • I don’t trust this new algorithm that the shady scientist came up with. She doesn’t care about saving all the kids. She just wants to have the “successful” ones that survive her experimentation.
  • I like Two Bits. That is all.
  • I thought the pregnant lady’s name was Amaya. But now they’re saying Anaya? Hmmm.
  • Dude! Anissa. You’re not going to put gloves on before collecting that silver goop? You don’t know what that is or if proximity, not just direct contact, could lead to infection. I thought you were a medical student. Come on, now.
  • Awww, people in the community left a vigil for Gambi at his shop. ::right in the feels::
  • Who else wanted to hug Jefferson when he was in Gambi’s shop? That was heartbreaking.
  • What I say? I said I don’t trust that shady scientist. I would’ve kept hitting her crazy ass until my knuckles bled. That heifer is evil incarnate.
  • OK. I don’t even know how to interpret that foolishness. And the fact that the Sheriff just let Anissa turn around and leave is just as crazy as all the crap crawling underneath his skin. Yep. Perfect reaction, Anissa. Get the hell out of there.

OK. That’s it. This was a good continuation. I see we’re out of the Book of Consequences, and on to the next chapter. Also, did anyone else catch that there was no fighting in this episode? For Thunder or Black Lightning. It made sense given the storyline, but it was a noticeable difference.

I can’t wait for next week’s episode. We better not have to wait for 3 or 4 episodes before we find out what happened to Gambi.
