So, what did you choose?
I really thought she was going to put biracial. Interesting.
I did too, honestly.
I really don’t know what they decide to do with Kat and race. I’m really baffled by all of that. Not to say that isn’t somebody’s story, but it’s messy and odd.
I mean I can’t speak to it in that way because I’m not biracial. But her accepting who she is and making her own choice I felt like was dealt with well. She took time with it and realized she’d internalized some things. I’m sure she’s gonna have to keep working through that in some way
I’m not biracial either so my problem with the story isn’t solely from her pov, but I have a huge problem with how they wrote her dad. Obviously that then reflects on how Kat views herself. As aware as she is this makes sense for how she handled some stuff last year, but why they’re choosing to make these specific choices with their one prominent biracial/Black woman and even more specifically with her Black dad is messy and it shows. And it’s not even that he’s on that colorblind bs cause that’s not completely out of sight, especially for ~some-~ Black men.
But it feels a whole lot like when The Golden Girls barely featured Black people, but one of the prominent times they did it was to make THEM the raging “racists”, as if that is how that whole thing predominantly works. It feels like it’s one of those kind of situations and that doesn’t sit well for me. I’m even less encouraged because I know there’s not Black women writers. If they are going that direction I hope they both introduce more Black people so it’s not so glaring like TGG or that they truly expand their direction. My problem is it really feels like they’re setting up his parents to be prejudice while not really having a multitude of Black perspectives (so that this perspective becomes the predominate one), especially when, while this perspective is an honest and truthful one sometimes, it makes it seem like “the Blacks are de racistssss” in a show with little Black perspective on a whole.
Is there confirmation there was no changes in the writer’s room along with the new showrunner? I haven’t seen anything and they just started tweeting again so I could miss things either way.
I don’t think they’ll go that far down that road cause ultimately this was about Kat and her choices for herself because of how she was raised – which did make sense to me- and the choices she can make now as an adult with her own mind and experiences.
You can’t please everyone, especially when it comes to topics like race.
I thought this very well done. I think the conversations and outcomes were realistic to who we know Kat to be, the kind of parents we understood her to have and how she was raised.
Her not wanting to deny either parent and feeling as though she does that by identifying with one part of her makes sense, if you try to see it from her perspective.
Her realizing that socially and politically, it’s more important that she embraces being black was the desired outcome and that’s what we got.
But a smaller takeaway was her realizing this thing with labels was more something her parents believed in and not something she came to on her own. I think in your early-mid 20s you do kind of start having these epiphanies about how much of what you think you are or believe aren’t genuinely you but shaped by your parents and you have to start questioning that.
I like it. Scarlet’s finally rubbing off on you.
Something like that.

“But uh… what I really wanted to say was just… how amazing you are. You’re courageous and thoughtful and honest and you’re the only person I’ve ever met, who.. you know completely throws me off my game. And… I- I think I really like you.”
You know I’d love to, but I have to go to work. It’s my first day back at Scarlet!
