Straight black men and white women will always be the weakest links in the struggle for equality, because they view equality as achieving status with white men. The problem with that is that white men’s status is contingent on the oppression of other people.

– Angela Davis

EDIT/NEWS: The person who originally posted this quote on twitter said she received the Angela Davis quote from Angela’s book Woman, Race, and Class.

Sadly, it is NOT a direct quote. If you search the book the quote is no where to be found. It is actually a summary of some of the subjects that this book speaks about. The book talks about power struggles and discusses the above mentioned pertaining to white women and black men. The literally just summarized some keys points.

It’s not a direct quote. Its a paraphrase. The person who originally posted it on twitter said it is a paraphrase on the books subject and never meant it to be taken as a direct quote. I figured it out when I searched for the source.

However, bell hooks has a really related quote:

“White women and black men have it both ways. They can act as oppressor or be oppressed. Black men may be victimized by racism, but sexism allows them to act as exploiters and oppressors of women. White women may be victimized by sexism, but racism enables them to act as exploiters and oppressors of black people. Both groups have led liberation movements that favor their interests and support the continued oppression of other groups. Black male sexism has undermined struggles to eradicate racism just as white female racism undermines feminist struggle. As long as these two groups or any group defines liberation as gaining social equality with ruling class white men, they have a vested interest in the continued exploitation and oppression of others.”
