“I love your joy.”
That gifset prompted me to pull up that diner scene and rewatch it with them and it’s just so…calm and tender at the same time. The casual way they can just sit and talk and the backstory we find out about him while also sitting with Charley as she ’s realizing the things they have in common is so nice.
And nice and calm is good for her considering her every other scene interaction is often filled with either her having to deal with something stressful or hurtful from farmers to family
I love your joy
I think that she’s at least able to exhale in a way that I don’t know if she’s able to exhale around anyone else. – Dawn Lyen-Gardner
Queen Sugar S3E13: From on the Pulse of Morning
I saw this post and it is so true for real life but I realize too that this is also why Romero saying to Charley “I love your joy” resonated so deeply with me. Charley has been through a lot. So much with Davis just a year fresh with all his betrayal, the scandal with Melina mixed with losing her dad, her divorce, Micah’s false arrest and trauma, only to be reopened all over again by Davis with the news of Tia. And, all this after a painful breakup with Remy by him not believing in her- all before he betrays her by sneaking behind her back with her sister. it’s such a brief statement but it’s one that stops her short and shocks her to hear and it’s not lost on any of us just how rare her joy has been to even see.
Remy referenced it too in S1 but notice the difference “Don’t let anyone steal your joy.” At that moment he was speaking once again of Nova and also Rah because she was upset. We see over the season to follow through he brought her some moments of joy, she didn’t have many and when it was time for Remy to show up for her he ultimately chose not to.
This referenced post is why I love and hope this slow building of a relationship continues with Romero and Charley. She doesn’t need flash and finesse and she doesn’t need lines and extra swagger. She’s had that and both times they failed her by not giving her the respect or belief she needed and desired. Charley wants someone to show up. Someone to care and support her. She needs a friend and someone that wants nothing from her but to be herself. To just relax and be able to breathe without worry about a thing ( family, foes, scandal and press, farmers, and crooks like the Landry’s and Boudreaux’s) while she heals from all the past year has dealt her. Through talks and laughs, silly dances, home-cooked meals, and sweet kisses. Tenderness.
She deserves this.
I got a reply back from Anthony Sparks. Romero Rodriguez is his full name.
