Sakina just tweeting her headcanon about Michelle and the knitting really makes me wanna write all the things for them. Of course after last week’s excellence, this show had to tick me off. Of course..but damn that tweet is perfect

I’d like to talk about the fact that Timeless did an episode centered on Denise Christopher (an LGBT woman of color AND the child of immigrant parents) and set it right…smack…on the day of Ronald Reagan being shot.

Reagan, as I wrote about in my 1×13 Historical Hour With Hilary, was… pretty terrible for a lot of reasons, but one of his most infamous legacies was his handling of the AIDS crisis, which pretty much wiped out an entire generation of gay men and was deliberately ignored by Reagan and the evangelical Christian right wing that propped up his support. Reagan never made any public acknowledgment of the epidemic and left office without having done so. Read more in the link above, but yes.

For Timeless to take that moment, cut Reagan out of it entirely, and then center it on the experience of an LGBT AND immigrant woman of color, to make it about her story, to have a major thread of the plot deal with her learning that it will be all right to be who she is in the future, that she will be able to marry the love of her life (another woman of color!) and have a family… and for that woman to be the respected leader and den mother of our team in the present…. and for her to reveal that her own traditional Indian mother has come around and loves her children and they’ve rebuilt a relationship…

That’s amazing, and it wrecked me.

I’ve heard that Rufus and Harriet Tubman tonight are also amazing, and we can point to so many more examples.

Far beyond ships or characters (which we love, because we’re fangirls), we need to fight to save this show just for what it exemplifies, what it believes, and what it does. End of story.

Right, well, now that everyone’s back safely, I’ll be taking off early. It’s family night, and my mother’s got a chicken biryani and a shrimp curry waiting for me. I’ll bring you leftovers. Wait, wait, your mother? Yeah. It wasn’t an easy road, but she came around eventually. It must be nice, uh, having her in your life. Oh, we still have our moments, but I can’t imagine our lives without her.
