Anissa goes to see after Jenn tells her that she needs “less cotton candy, and more soul food.”
From Nafessa’s CB.com interview

Context happening on the sly, thanks
‘Black Lightning’ 2×03 screener secrets: Welcome Principal Lowry, I hate you already
Black Lightning 2×03 “Master Lowry” introduces three new characters, checks in with current ones and throws a few surprises our way.
Here are five more teasers to get you excited for the newest Black Lightning episode!
1. Introducing Perenna: Superhero therapist for hire
We meet three new characters in this episode (one of whom I’ll talk about in my next teaser), but Perenna is by far my favorite. First of all, she’s a badass, superpowered Black woman and I’m always down to see that on my screen. Secondly, she’s brought on to help Jenn both control her powers and make sense of her inner emotional turmoil, two things that I’m so incredibly happy to see the show address.
2. Principal Lowry: Yeah, no thanks
Unfortunately, not all the new characters are as awesome as Perenna or intriguing as Dr. Jace, a imprisoned doctor turned assistant to Lynn that we likewise meet in this episode.
That’s because one of the new characters we meet in this episode is Mike Lowry, Jefferson’s replacement as principal at Garfield High. And while I was initially going to try and give this dude some leeway — he is stepping into some huge shoes to fill — he basically proved that he was The Worst about .2 seconds into the episode. We don’t see a lot of him (thank God), but what we do see? Not good at all.
3. Tobias Whale’s to-do list
Were you just as confused as I was as to what Tobias was doing all last episode, or was that just me?
If you answered no, then your predictions will likely be confirmed in this episode. If you answered yes, then your confusion will be cleared up throughout the course of this episode.
4. Keeping up with Anissa
No appearance of Thunder in this episode, but since Anissa has ten different things going on at any given time, that still leaves her with plenty of storyline to go on.
We get to see her continue her reign as Freeland’s personal Robin Hood, this time with a new crusade that she’s working towards (and a new partner). We likewise see more Grace (yay!), who Anissa goes to see after Jenn tells her that she needs “less cotton candy, and more soul food.” Bless you and your real talk, Jenn.
5. Tying up loose threads from the premiere
Ok, so maybe tying up loose ends is a little overambitious of a statement, but I will say it at least addresses them and answers a lot of lingering questions I had at the end of the first two episodes — about Painkiller, Fowdy and Henderson, among others.
Actually, in many ways, this episode feels more like a continuation of the season premiere, like it was meant to follow that one in order since many of the episode beats are similar and the storylines all match up to ones that were presented in the “Rise of the Green Light Babies.”

@shaloved30 She’s 22?! Oh wow. So she went straight from undergrad to med school and is only in her first year.
Yep. I was reading this article the other day and Nafessa says it.
“She’s still finding herself and is only 22 years old, so she’s still finding out who she is and what she wants.” Williams continued. “This new life of being a super hero it’s not easy. And it’s not easy to talk to everyone about it.’
BLACK MOTHERS shouldn’t be dying after giving birth but they are and it isn’t because of complications or health issues, it’s because NO ONE IS LISTENING WHEN THEY SPEAK!
Why u gotta make it a race thing tho pretty much everyone can die from childbirth lmao wtf
Black women are 243% more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts. No you didn’t read that wrong. 243 FUCKING PERCENT. SO YEAH IT’S VERY MUCH ABOT RACE YOU UNCLE RUCKUS ASS BITCH.
@baroness-against-ddlg do some goddamned research.
My God. RIP.
Seems Fandom Thought Friday is a thing that’s happening. Keep the thoughts coming. I’m gonna try and work on lots of things throughout the day to post as I can so heads up
Does anyone else find Anissa really inconsiderate? Especially when it comes to romantic relationships.
So first you’re asking if we find her inconsiderate in life, in general? ABSOLUTELY not. I’d strongly disagree there.
We’ve seen her in ONE romantic relationship and yeah hmm I don’t know what to make of her flaw when it comes to romance. I do know this idea she just ghosted Grace then came to her job to hang out with another woman needs more looking into, that would be extremely inconsiderate or worse if it actually happened but again, I SERIOUSLY doubt she knew Grace was working there.
That wasn’t even her party, it was Zoe’s and Grace was working at the event as wait staff.
OP and folks like them doing everything to justify shit talking Anissa cause they refuse to accept this ship was always slow burn, smh
Oh YEAH I forgot that was Zoe’s party, too. I don’t know if op was implying Anissa was flirting with another woman at Grace’s workplace, for clarification, but it’s something I’ve seen mentioned a few times that just doesn’t make sense.
Anissa… the woman who insists on doing everything she can to help her people even if it hurts her because she cares about their rights being violated and their collective hurt, the 23-25 year old woman who watches after her 15-17 year old sister like it is literally her job to protect her even if it means upsetting her and has spent the last however many episodes trying to tend to her emotional reaction to discovering she has powers (that’s what all the “it’s a gift”, “look at the good it does”, “you don’t know you can’t have kids. Dad has powers and we’re here”, and generally trying to convince her she’s not a freak is about)…is she inconsiderate? She’s quite literally the opposite of the definition as a general part of her personality.
So to say “especially” in romantic relationships doesn’t make sense to me because it indicates a basal level of thoughtlessness that is heightened in romance.
If you said “particularly” in romance, it would imply that even if that’s not a general trait, it reveals itself in these specific relationships. And i might be inclined to agree… if we’d seen her in more than one romantic relationship and actually got to see more of that relationship dynamic over time.
All we have canonically is she was dating Chenoa and kept her at arm’s length, then met Grace and started pursuing her before ending things with Chenoa. Then she was spending time with Grace and trying to connect with her, left her a voicemail when she hadn’t seen her in a while. And then we meet Zoe after Grace has been MIA for however long. That’s it. We know absolutely nothing else about what’s happened. Fan theories are not facts.
Me, constantly
Peeped that post the other day about Anissa. I feel like there isn’t much of a space for her character on here/or SM in general without ridiculous nitpicking. She has to fit this specific space for people to like her. She’s not perfect and that bothers them. If people wait to watch the next episodes and see how they showcase her character they can shut up a little. Her development is no different from Hero S/L. if people were as invented in the show they would follow offseason news but shrugs.
That post I replied on was just made today but the source of it and how it was left i think is what continues to bother me most about it. It’s not enough to have fandom continuously judge her based off nothing but mere headcanon and assumptions but to have a blog that is supposed to be a safe space and a place for actual discussion of our characters post that up like that is sooo…whew
@shaloved30 I don’t disagree. I also have criticisms and questions about their choices. I only disagree when it’s said summarily that season 3 was bad.
Yeah. I guess it all depends on if that statement for whoever lies in the fact that the frustration outweighed the good for them or who their bias lays with most. I know if you come for mostly Nova and Nova alone you gonna feel that way on her behalf. There’s no way around it, book or no book lol
