For Blanchett, she believes this defies the whole point of acting. “It also speaks to something that I’m quite passionate about in storytelling generally, but in film specifically, is that film can be quite a literal medium,” she said.

“And I will fight to the death for the right to suspend disbelief and play roles beyond my experience. I think reality television and all that that entails had an extraordinary impact, a profound impact on the way we view the creation of character,” she continued.

“I think it provides a lot of opportunity, but the downside of it is that we now, particularly in America, I think, we expect and only expect people to make a profound connection to a character when it’s close to their experience,” she said. (x)

This is the whole Cate quote (which in part was on that post) and I hear what she’s saying but still for some folks they want LGBTQ characters played by LGBTQ folks and that I don’t think you can really argue against cause there is nothing wrong with folks wanting that authenticity

I don’t think straight ppl shouldn’t play gay characters. I agree with others who have said that writing is far more crucial to gay representation than the orientation of the actors. But as long as lgbtq+ actors struggle to get roles (of any orientation) once they are out, then straight ppl shouldn’t taking those roles imo. As soon as lgbtq+ actors are getting cast as easily and in as diverse roles as straight people, then fine. Until then, give those roles to the people who fit them.

That being said, the other issue I can see with straight people taking gay roles is that they won’t be able to see when the writing is bad representation or off nearly as easily or as well as gay people. So there’s that.

“Cate Blanchett recently defended the right of straight actors to play LGBTQ characters on-screen, saying it’s something she’ll “fight to the death” for… and despite the growing feeling that queer characters should be played by queer actors, Blanchett doesn’t agree…”

“Straight actors are almost unanimously lauded for playing queer characters — 52 straight actors have been nominated for Oscars for playing LGBTQ characters — while openly queer actors find it hard to even be cast.”
